Tabletop RPG Support Group
Tabletop RPG Support Group
>> Are you feeling isolated?
>> Do you struggle to build relationships with others?
>> Does having fun and being creative while feeling supported by others sound appealing to you?
Tabletop role playing games have been around for decades and are more popular than ever thanks to the most prominent of them - Dungeons & Dragons - making its way into the mainstream. Self-identified nerds like myself have more access to resources to make their homebrew games better and are thankful that others are opening themselves up to the fun that role playing games provide. The rise in popularity has caused those in the mental health field to look at tabletop role-playing games through a clinical lens and the preliminary results are promising.
This is where we come in! The Tabletop RPG Support Group is a weekly support group primarily for neurodivergent adults with or without an ADHD diagnosis that is open to all adults looking for a fun and creative way to support others, feel supported by others and be themselves in a safe space facilitated by a trained therapist.
What You Get
8 hours in a supportive setting spread across 4 weeks with the total campaign time being about 5 hours
All necessary materials
Light snacks/drinks during each session
A positive experience (hopefully!)
The Structure
This is a recurring group offered in 4 week sections. The specific game being played will be determined prior to the start of the group and more details on the structure are below:
Session 1: Introduction to the group, group members, and the tabletop game as well as character creation and the opportunity to ask questions.
Sessions 2 and 3: Members will be given time (about 5 minutes each) to decompress and the other participating group members will be encouraged to listen and be supportive. The first and second story arcs of the game will be played (about 1.5 hours) and then group members will be encouraged to share positive feedback about the campaign or other players at the end (about 5 minutes total).
Session 4: Members will be given decompression time, as stated above, and the final story arc of the game will be played. Upon completion, all group members will be given a group feedback form to complete and the group will be concluded.
Cost
This is a support group and it is not meant to be a replacement for individual or group therapy, therefore, it is not a service that is covered by insurance and has a reduced cost. Participants are encouraged to attend all 4 sessions as this will provide the most benefit for the individual and for the group as a whole.
$30 (individual session)
$100 (all sessions paid for up front, savings of $20)
Meet Bobby Lipps, The Facilitator
Bobby is a fully licensed Master’s level social worker with over 11 years of experience as a medical social worker who currently provides individual therapy services to clients with a wide range of mental health conditions, but feels most comfortable working with anxiety, ADHD, and people experiencing life transitions. He has even more experience as a neurodivergent nerd that likes to
spend time with his family, play Pokémon, and think about engaging stories to tell. He completed a 16 week therapeutically-blended tabletop RPG course offered by The Bodhana Group and highly recommends it!
